A LOVE LETTER TO MY DREAM JOB

The Sweet Life of a Florist

By: Sofia Kristiansen

Giving, receiving, and creating bouquets make my heart soar. I can hand-select the flowers I want in my perfect arrangement. The process of creating a floral arrangement is so calming, healing, and satisfying to me. While dancing around your shop collecting pieces to create the perfect bouquet, you are surrounded by plants and flowers all with their own little story and different personalities. There is something magical about a “work” environment that is bursting with the colorful gifts of nature and filling your nose with the delicious smells of nature. Every bouquet is different so this job would not be filled with monotony and the mundane experience of more traditional careers like sales or banking, snooze. It is an amazing creative outlet that has the privilege of bringing smiles and happiness to everyday customers while fulfilling my craving for creativity throughout the process.

Flowers have many symbolic meanings, making them a very cherished gift to both receive and give. The type and color of flowers can bring unique and different meanings. The sunflower’s yellow petals radiate and represent joy and happiness while chrysanthemums can symbolize death and mourning. Tulips are known for symbolizing spring and the new life and warmth of the changing seasons. The tradition of brides carrying flowers down the aisle dates back to ancient Rome as a symbol of fertility, fidelity, and the start of new beginnings. Bouquets are exchanged between couples on Valentine’s Day as an act of love. Loved ones bring white roses or chrysanthemums to funerals in demonstration of their sorrow for someone who has passed. A flower’s cultural significance is so interesting and a gorgeous tradition that has existed for thousands of years. This precious sweetness of nature holds so much meaning, joy, and beauty.

My Valentine's Day Bouquet

While living in my tiny apartment in South Central, I have been doing my best to improve my green thumb. I have a fig plant named Figgy that I pay great attention to. He has proven to me that I am capable of being a sufficient plant mom. I have had bouquets last for a little over a week in my care because I am attentive, place them in sunshine every morning, refill the water when it gets low, and sprinkle plant food in their vase when I feel like the pedals are fading. These little experiments have heightened my desire to become a florist. I dream of owning my own little flower shop where my office is covered shoulders high with plants and flowers from all over the world. This would be my paradise.

Flowers make my heart sing.

Pro Tip:

Give your plants names. This will trick your brain into thinking they are pets and you will feel more inclined to care for them. I did this with Figgy and it has been great for maintaining his health and wellness. I have another succulent on my windowsill that I am thinking about naming Freddy or Fuzz. Fuzz because he has fuzzy leaves or Freddy because Figgy and Freddy just roll off the tongue.

  1. I can truly feel your love and passion for creating bouquets through this post and it's even made me appreciate the art of crafting flower bouquets more than usual. I never knew the symbolism behind why brides walk down the aisle with flowers, so that was something new to learn. Also Mr. Figgy looks amazing!

  2. Sofia I absolutely love Mr. Figgy he is such a beautiful plant. I can see the passion that you have for flowers and plants. I've always found plant stores to be beautiful magical places I love visiting them. Sadly I am terrible at keeping plants alive I've only managed to keep one alive. I am trying to learn more and get better at it though.

  3. I like the name Freddy and agree with your reasoning behind it, Freddy and Figgy do roll off the tongue. I also love flowers, they are beautiful and they can brighten up any room or space! My favorite flowers are peonies but they are pretty hard to find or really expensive when they are out of season.
