Who You Are Matters

I come from forty-five minutes away on a light-traffic day. I chose USC because I always saw fancy cars sporting a USC license plate frame and waterfront houses proudly flying the Trojan flag growing up. This set in motion the “if they can do it, why can’t I?” mindset, and my decision was made that I would attend USC and create the life I dreamed of for myself. My mom received her teaching degree from USC. After school, she taught at Hoover elementary, just down the street. My dad graduated high school in flip flops and needless to say, did not pursue higher education in any sort of traditional way. He instead followed his passion and love for surfing and sailing.

Since turning sixteen, I have been following the same dream. I am going on to pursue a career in commercial real estate, hopefully making me the big bucks so I can retire in a beachfront home with a blue vintage Ford Bronco parked in my driveway and a Persian munchkin kitten sitting in my lap while I sit on my front porch and look out over the ocean. This is my fantasy… but I know I am capable of achieving it because I am less than one semester away from completing my first step: graduate USC and have accepted a job at a commercial real estate firm in LA, second step. Now I just have to put my head down and work… hard…bummer.

Once this fantasy has been fulfilled, I will make more time for myself to pursue the actual admirable hobbies that make me happy, this sounds depressing but it’s not. Once I have a stable income, I will invest my excess time and money into proper pottery equipment and flower arranging. I love to create fun and interesting ceramic pieces and usually drag my friends to pottery classes with me. My Pinterest account is full of bouquet inspiration and my dream career would be a florist.

Eek. I am running out of my 500 words.

I am like my mom because I am a very independent woman which sometimes gets in the way of having good relationships because I can be overly self-sufficient. I am like my dad because I tend to always be in a good mood and want to see the very best in people.

I am unlike my mom because my friends have made comments that they are intimidated by her and she feels “cold” at times but I don’t think I give off the same energy, at least I hope I don’t. I am unlike my dad because I am very driven to achieve my goals and go to a university that is academically rigorous which is something he would never take on, no offense dad.

I played a prank on my dad and texted him I was dropping out of Marshall and USC because I couldn’t handle the academics and he replied, “I’m so sorry to hear that cupcake, that must be very difficult for you”. So in short, I have not been pushed by my parents to achieve anything great, they have only supported and loved me. My biggest motivator and expectation-setter is myself.

Emma Watson. She is so gorgeous inside and out and uses her platform to promote social change. I wish I could be as cool as her.

SLOTH: I like to sleep, sometimes too much.

Significant tree or plant? All of them. My mom works at a non-profit library and garden so every Mother’s Day or birthday we are dragged to a new garden for her to explore and show off her plant-naming skills to my brothers and me. We are frequently quizzed by my mom on our plant naming abilities…I’m still not very good at it which gets to be embarrassing after twenty-one years.

  1. I LOVE Emma Watson - I think she is such an amazing person and role model, and I have always looked up to her growing up and still do.
I also love pottery and floral arrangements, so it is really cool that you are passionate about that and are excited to find the time after college to pursue that (I don't think that is depressing at all)

  2. I love both Emma Watson and sloths like you I also enjoy sleeping maybe a little too much. Persian munchkin kittens are so cute what made you want this cat over all other cats? During the begging of the pandemic I tried to take on pottery but found that while I can do it im not the best at it, I also go on Pinterest to look for inspiration its a great place to look!

  4. Your dream of being a florist is awesome! Have you ever thought of making pottery that looks like flowers? Maybe the best of both worlds; it's an untapped market.
